Sustainability Initiatives: Our Commitment to Environmental Responsibility

At Amity Motel, we understand the importance of reducing our carbon footprint and taking responsibility for our impact on the environment. That's why we have implemented several sustainability initiatives to reduce our energy consumption, water usage, and waste. In this blog post, we will discuss the various measures we have taken to promote environmental responsibility and sustainability.

Going Paperless

As a part of our efforts to reduce paper usage, we have adopted a near-paperless approach in our administration office. We use an app to communicate with our housekeeping staff, and we gather guest information on a tablet during check-in to reduce paper usage. We provide electronic invoices via email, and paper invoices are available upon request. We have also invested in an all-in-one printer, scanner, and copier that uses less than half the energy required to purchase each machine individually. Our office uses Google Drive, a carbon-neutral platform that is aiming to be carbon-free by 2030.

Building Design

When we built Amity Motel in 2009, we made sustainability a top priority. We designed the rooms to face the sun, allowing for natural lighting to be used as much as possible. Our rooms have double glazing on all windows and are fully insulated, allowing guests to enjoy a comfortable temperature without relying on heating and cooling. This allows us to run our heat pumps at a lower temperature, saving power. We regularly service and clean our heat pumps to ensure they are running efficiently. Additionally, we have installed guest-controlled power slots in all of our rooms, which turn off non-essential power when the guest leaves the room. All outdoor lights are on timers, which means they are only on when needed, and no energy is wasted. In 2017, we converted all lights in our units to energy-efficient LED bulbs, reducing our energy consumption by half.

Water Conservation

At Amity Motel, we are mindful of our water consumption and have implemented several measures to conserve water. We have installed water restrictors on our showerheads and provided toilets with the option to use half flushes. We keep our water temperature at the recommended 60℃ to keep our energy consumption low. We regularly check for and respond to any leaks around sinks and toilets to reduce wasted water. Our stormwater drains have filters to limit litter that may otherwise end up in our rivers and seas.

Reducing Waste

We are doing our part to reduce waste in the hospitality industry by eliminating single-use products. We have installed beautiful amber glass bottles from ECO Society in our guest rooms. Ecostore provides our soap, which is delivered in sugar plastic bottles that are 100% recyclable. The sugarcane used to make the bottles removes carbon from the atmosphere, making it a sustainable and renewable source. We buy our refills in bulk to reduce packaging waste, eliminating thousands of single-use bottles that would otherwise end up in landfill.

Eco-Friendly Cleaning

All of the cleaning products we use at Amity Motel are eco-friendly and sourced from Ecolab, a global leader in water, hygiene, and infection prevention solutions. Our cleaning cloths are also sourced from companies that ensure a green manufacturing process. We use color-coded cloths for specific areas and surfaces and change them between each room to maintain hygiene. We wash our cloths and towels onsite, reducing the carbon footprint that would occur if they were transported offsite. We have invested in energy-efficient washing machines and dryers to reduce our chemical, water, and power usage.

Guest Participation

We invite our guests to join us in our efforts to reduce our impact on the environment. We have information about our sustainability initiatives in each room and encourage guests to ask us questions about our efforts. We also have recycling bins available throughout the property and encourage guests to use them.
